Inspiring the Next Generation: Catalyst at STUDiO’s Architecture Industry Night

Last week, Catalyst had the privilege of contributing to STUDiO’s Architecture Industry Night — an event dedicated to connecting students with professionals across the architecture and design sectors.

Representing our team were Tessa Leonard, Catalyst Associate and Design Team Lead, and James De Bono, a Designer, who joined a panel of industry peers to share insights, experiences, and career advice with students from Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Architecture.

James spoke about his journey from completing a Master’s in Interior Architecture and tutoring at VUW, to now leading national projects spanning gym and wellness spaces to large-scale commercial offices. With a strong technical background and a passion for 3D visualisation, VR, and rendering, James offered students a glimpse into the cutting-edge tools shaping the future of design.

Tessa, with over 20 years’ experience in workplace design and strategy, discussed her role leading complex projects of 10,000+ sqm across New Zealand. As an Associate on Catalyst’s Senior Leadership Team and lead designer of our award-winning 22 The Terrace project, a 10-floor seismic refurbishment achieving a 5 GreenStar rating, Tessa shared her perspective on delivering innovative, sustainable spaces that meet both client aspirations and technical demands.

For both speakers, the evening was about more than sharing knowledge; it was about connecting with the next wave of designers and inspiring them to see the many pathways a career in architecture and design can take.

“The students asked fantastic questions and were eager to learn about real-world project challenges and opportunities,” says James. “It’s exciting to think that some of them will soon be shaping the future of our industry.”

We’re proud to support initiatives like STUDiO’s Industry Night that build bridges between education and practice, and we look forward to seeing these up-and-coming leaders make their mark.
