Project Information
Catalyst was initially engaged by Sudima to assess the acoustics of the bedrooms in a hotel. However, after going above and beyond, they were presented with a comprehensive new scope that included a reception and admin block, a 90-bed wing, and the refurbishment of two older wings to bring them up to a modern standard in 2014.
As the project progressed, Catalyst expanded its efforts to explore additional features such as conference facilities, a new wing to replace the refurbished wings, and a review of the current restaurant to accommodate the newly added rooms.
The design process took into account various factors, such as the hotel's proximity to Christchurch Airport, acoustics, and the overall plan for the area.
Catalyst worked closely with the client to source both international and locally supplied furniture, fixtures, and equipment. The hotel, which was originally constructed in the late 1960s, had undergone prior additions. However, the main buildings and front of the house lacked the corporate appeal that the hotel chain desired for its guests.
The conference facilities were too small and over-utilised, and the Canterbury earthquake presented an opportunity to increase the number of beds and conference facilities while providing options for various conference room sizes to create a new experience for guests.
